The Turnips Stock Market
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one of the objects that recurs in every opus is the turnip. That's right, the turnip is a must-have, not because it also catches ants, but because it's one of the best ways to make bells. In this guide, you'll find out all about turnips, their uses and, above all, how to take advantage of them.
What's a turnip?
First of all, a turnip is a vegetable sold by Daisy Mae, who visits your village every Sunday. Turnips are great for catching a type of insect called ants. But turnips are also a great way to make lots of bells and whistles in Animal Crossing!
Turnips = lots of bells?!?
Turnips work in much the same way as the stock market and speculation, but much simpler, of course! To put it simply, your aim is to buy turnips from Porcelette (she arrives in your village on Sunday mornings from 5am to 12pm only) at a set price and sell them for MORE to Tom Nook in the Nook store to make a profit.
Be quick, as you have less than 1 week to resell them, otherwise the turnips will rot and you won't be able to do anything with them (apart from catch ants with the rotten turnips). Read on to find out how to resell them at a profitable price in the Nook Shop!
How do I get turnips?
To get your turnips, you'll need to buy them from Daisy Mae, the turnip merchant. She visits your village on Sunday mornings from 5am to 12pm only. Porcelette sells her turnips for between 80 and 120 bells each. However, if you miss her on Sunday, you'll have to wait until next week (or cheat by changing the time).
Go and chat with her and select the "I'd like to buy some" option. She'll sell you the turnips at a set price, so you won't be able to negotiate. What's more, she'll be able to tell you more about the turnip concept if you select the "What's the deal?" option when you chat with her.
How to make a profit?
Once you've bought the turnips from Daisy Mae, your aim is to resell them at a higher price in the Nook store. * It's important to know that you can't sell turnips to Tom Nook on Sundays. This means you have less than 1 week to resell them. Every day (except Sundays), it will be possible to resell turnips at the Nook store 2 times. In the morning (5am to 12pm) and in the afternoon (12:01pm to Nook store closing). The cost of the turnip will be different each time.
Your aim is to sell the turnips back to Tom Nook for more than you paid Daisy Mae for them. For example, if you bought the turnips at 100 bells each, your aim is to resell them to the Nook store on a day when Tom Nook is buying turnips at 120, 150, 200, 300, or even 600 bells (if you're very lucky) to make as much profit as possible.
The price varies twice a day (morning and afternoon), and it's not always clear whether it's going up or down. Prices are extremely variable and can vary from 50 bells today in the morning to 300 bells in the afternoon and vice versa, the price can go from 350 to 78 bells in 1 day. Be strategic and not too slow, as you have less than 1 week to resell them (Monday to Saturday). Check prices every day, if possible.
Lots of turnips and a full inventory?
Since Daisy Mae sells turnips in packs of 10, your inventory fills up very quickly. It's important to have an empty inventory when you buy turnips from Daisy Mae. If you want to buy more, you can store your turnips on the ground outside or in your house to empty your inventory - no one will touch your turnips.
On the other hand, it's important to know that your turnips will rot next Sunday (so you have less than 1 week to resell them).
In conclusion, it's up to you to decide when to sell your turnips. It's normal to make losses, it's part of the game. If it's Thursday evening and you still haven't sold your turnips, hope that the resale price will go up the next day, but you have to sell them before they rot, otherwise they're worth nothing.
Additional notes
- You'll have exactly 12 opportunities to return your turnips (mornings and afternoons), from Monday to Saturday.
- If you're not happy with the resale prices in your island's Nook store, you can visit your friends' islands (if they also have Animal Crossing) to see if the prices are better, since they'll be different from your island.
- You can get a turnip course by talking to Tommy and Timmy in their store.
- Turnip sales at the Nook boutique can range from 30 bells to 600 bells!
- Pay attention to store opening hours so you don't miss the opportunity to sell them!
- Caution! Turnips are able to rot after a week (the following Sunday) or if you change the time.
- A rotten turnip will allow you to catch the ant, an insect that can be donated to the museum to grow your collection.
- Depositing turnips on the ground outside your village may prevent you from achieving a 5-star rank for your island's reputation, as they will be considered as trash or debris. To avoid this, you can place them in your house.
