How to fish
In this guide, we'll explain the mechanics of how to fish and how to get a fishing rod. Read on to become a Coral Island fishing pro.
Fishing is a great way to make money at the start of the game. What's more, the fish you catch for the first time can be donated to the museum to expand its collection. Indeed, when you start the game, you'll receive quests that ask you to make donations to the museum (the first types of fish, insects or artifacts you find).
How to buy a fishing rod
Before you start, you'll need a fishing rod. To do this, you'll have to play until the 3rd day of the calendar. On day 3, you'll receive a letter from Sunny and Eleanor asking you to go to the seaside cottage to receive your welcome gift.
Head for the seaside cottage and enter to meet Sunny and Eleanor. You'll see a cinematic in which the couple argue over the best hobby (fishing or catching insects). Choose one of the suggested answers, but your answer won't make any difference as you'll receive the fishing rod and net at the same time.
How to fish
Step 1: Once you've received your fishing rod, head for the beach, lake or other water source. Choose the fishing rod from your inventory (using your mouse wheel) and left-click to cast your line into the water. * Hold your click longer if you want to cast far.
Step 2: Wait a few seconds before you see the shadow of a fish approaching your hook.
Step 3: Once the fish has taken the bait, a line will appear on the screen indicating your progress (whether you're about to catch the fish or lose it). Hold down the left mouse button to pull the fish towards you. If you see that the fish is too agitated (see photo), release the mouse for 1 or 2 seconds and hold down the left mouse click until the bar reaches the orange hook at the end of the line.
* You may need to release the mouse several times to calm the fish before pulling it towards you to catch it.
Additional note
- The shape of fish and trash in the water is the same. The only way to know you're fishing a trash (poster or garbage) is when the fish doesn't seem to struggle when you're pulling it towards you.
- When you catch a certain type of fish for the first time, donate it to the museum to add to your collection. If you catch the same fish several times, sell it to make some money.
- Fishing requires a certain amount of energy. Make sure you're always equipped to feed when you need to.
- Make sure you always have room in your inventory when fishing, otherwise you risk losing your catch.
- The types of fish you catch vary according to the seasons in the game.
