Detective Pikachu Returns - Prologue

In this Detective Pikachu Returns walkthrough, we'll take you through the entire process of this part of the game, introducing you to Tim and Pikachu's adventure.

When you start the game, a cinematic will appear in which a flashback of the events that took place in the previous Detective Pikachu game will be visible. You'll then find Pikachu and Tim sitting behind the mayor, who is giving a speech thanking Pikachu and Tim for their detective work. Suddenly, Corviknight appears, terrorizing the audience and stealing Pikachu's hat.

You now have control of Tim. Move left (towards Pikachu) to pick up the book on the floor. It's the mayor's diary.

Wake up the Pidove

Step off the platform you're standing on and you'll be faced with a problem. A Pidove seems to have passed out, and you'll have to find a way to wake it up. During this very first investigation, you'll learn that Pikachu will talk to the Pokemon and translate it for you, and you'll talk to the humans. What's more, if you get stuck during an investigation, simply press the left button (light bulb icon) to consult Pikachu and get a clue.

Talk to Pokemons for clues

  • Chat with Pidove nearby
  • Discuss with Magnemite to the right
  • Discuss with Xatu to the left
  • Discuss with Aromatisse to the left

You'll learn that Aromatisse has the ability to give off a scent that Poichigeons like, and that it will be useful for waking up the Pidove on the floor.

Help Aromatisse and wake up Pidove

Just ask the Pidove to leave. Aromatisse will then help the Pidove to wake up. And so your first mission comes to an end. Corviknight appears once again. Now it's time to retrieve Pikachu's lost hat.

Find Pikachu's hat

Head left past the café. You'll see a bazaar with several apples on the ground. Head for the apple on the left and meet Applin. Ask him questions to find out more about the situation. 

Inspect the tree

Inspect the tree to the right of the apple to meet Alolan Exeggutor. Ask him some questions too.

Find the 2 Applins

Climb the tree

Pikachu climbs the tree to retrieve his hat. Press A as quickly as possible to prevent him from falling. Repeat until Pikachu gets his hat back.

Once Applin is reunited with her friends and the hat has been found, the mayor's ceremony will resume. You'll then find yourself back at home. Talk to the characters present and head for the TV on the left. You'll learn that an explosion has occurred in the mountains surrounding Ryme City. This concludes the prologue to the next chapter: The Missing Jewel.
