Once you've visited the cavern, the next day Pablo, the village blacksmith, will pay you a visit. He'll let you know that you can use ores for a variety of purposes. You can turn ores into bars using a furnace. These bars can be used to improve your tools (just visit the blacksmith) and make your farm chores easier. 

Once you've built a furnace and crafted 1 bronze bar, the game's eighth main quest: Smelting for progress comes to an end, making way for your next quest in Coral Island: Entrance Exam.
